Our History

Bergli Books was founded in 1990 by Dianne Dicks to publish the anthology of stories about living in Switzerland Ticking Along with the Swiss because she couldn't find a publisher in London or New York who would consider it. Most people warned her not to do it herself and that it was a wild idea but fortunately Dianne Dicks didn't listen, likes wild ideas and a good challenge. On a shoestring budget the book (and many that followed) became a big success. Wild ideas are still very important to Bergli's continued success. The Bergli titles appeal to anyone interested in making the most of life in Switzerland, especially to the Swiss themselves, at home and abroad, who enjoy discovering the many fascinating facets of their upbringing, attitudes and values through these pages. Dianne Dicks was able to find many international and Swiss writers who are skilled observers of the many opportunities available in Switzerland to understand Swiss ways and enjoy living and working here.

In 2002 the Bergli Bookshop opened its doors in Basel in the heart of town on Rümelinsplatz. Managed by Basel's popular and professional bookseller, Angela Joos, it quickly built up an enthusiastic clientele who appreciated the personal service and bi-monthly events on a wide range of interesting and quirky subjects. The death of Angela Joos in 2005 was a huge loss for the shop and the many customers who were so fond of her friendly, professional help. This good customer service, Talk Parties and Book Discussions remain at the heart of Bergli Books' mission to bring good English books to Switzerland and international people together. You'll find today an enthusiastic and lively team of booksellers, Patricia Eckert, Viviane Kammermann, Ursula Jost and bookselling assistant, Mary Hogan, dedicated to finding the books you want and getting them here as quickly and economically as possible.

The publishing side of Bergli has stayed true to its roots and core values and continues to successfully publish Swiss interest and intercultural books for a global audience.

Stay tuned . . .

Our Name

There are two stories, pick the one you like best, both are true.

Story A: Bergli Books was founded in 1990 at a location just up the slope from Weggis near Lucerne on a most beautiful area of MountRigi referred to by locals as 'Bergli'. Dianne Dicks has always been amused about the habit of the Swiss to endear things by putting the suffix 'li' on almost anything. Bergli means 'little mountain', an endearing vision for big challenges.

Story B: When a Swiss person today starts a new business, he or she will give it a trendy English name. Soon everything in Switzerland will have an English name. Dianne Dicks founded Bergli Books in 1990 to specialize in English books for Switzerland and gave the company the name of 'Bergli' as a way of supporting and promoting Swiss culture.
